Behavior is not disobedience—it’s communication.
When your dog is barking, lunging, shutting down, or struggling to cope, they’re not trying to be “difficult.” They’re responding to how they feel in that moment. At Wholistic Pet Care, we start there—by understanding the emotional and environmental factors driving the behavior, not just the behavior itself.
My approach goes beyond traditional training, combining behavior science with a deep understanding of how health, environment, and daily life influence behavior. I look at the whole picture—medical history, nutrition, routine, and emotional well-being—because behavior does not exist in a vacuum. Pain, stress, unmet needs, and chronic overwhelm all play a role in how a dog responds to the world.
From there, we build a plan centered around desensitization and counterconditioning—helping your dog feel safe before asking them to respond differently. We pair this with thoughtful management strategies so your dog isn’t repeatedly pushed into situations they’re not ready to handle. This creates space for real learning to happen, instead of reinforcing fear or reactivity.
You may have heard terms like “positive reinforcement” or “force-free training.” While those are part of what we do, the goal here is deeper than teaching commands or stopping unwanted behaviors. We are changing emotional responses, building confidence, and strengthening the relationship between you and your dog. Because of this, we do not use aversive tools or punishment-based methods. These approaches can increase fear, anxiety, and aggression, while also suppressing communication—making it harder to truly understand and support your dog. Instead, we focus on teaching skills, meeting needs, and creating lasting behavior change rooted in trust, not compliance.
Whether you’re navigating puppyhood, adolescent challenges, or more complex behavior concerns like fear, anxiety, or aggression, our goal remains the same: To help you better understand your dog, support their needs, and create a life where both of you feel safe, connected, and confident.
